After a 6-5 season, on November 30, 2004, Notre Dame released its head football coach, Tyrone Willingham. After preliminary overtures to Utah head coach Urban Meyer were rejected due to Meyer accepting the Florida head coaching position, Notre Dame narrowed their list down to Weis and Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator and former Notre Dame star quarterback Tom Clements. The University ultimately decided to hire Weis, and on December 12, 2004, Weis was named the 28th head football coach in Notre Dame history, agreeing to a six-year contract worth a reported $2 million per year. Tyrone Willingham 2002-2005

Willingham got off to an auspicious start at Notre Dame. He began the 2002 season by going 8-0, becoming the only first-year coach in Notre Dame history to win 10 games. For his efforts he was named the ESPN/Home Depot College Coach of the Year, the Scripps College Coach of the Year, the Black Coaches Association Male Coach of the Year and the George Munger Award College Coach of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club.

Louis Leo Holtz (born on January 6, 1937 in Follansbee, West Virginia) is an author, television commentator, motivational speaker, and former NCAA football and NFL head coach. Holtz is the only coach in NCAA history to lead six different programs to bowl games and the only coach to guide four different programs to the final top 20 rankings.
